What is the National Will Register?
The National Will Register is the UK’s official will registration and search service, with over 10.5 million wills recorded. It lets people register where their will is stored so loved ones or executors can find the latest version when needed.
What is a will search and why is it needed?
A will search is a lookup that checks The National Will Register (10.5M+ wills) and, if needed, conducts a wider REACH search for unregistered wills. Executing this search before probate confirms whether a valid will exists and locates the latest version. Without it, an executor risks distributing the estate incorrectly – they could even be liable if a later will is found after probate.
Who can search with The National Will Register?
Anyone can perform a search on The National Will Register by name, but only authorised people (typically the deceased’s executors or close family/beneficiaries) receive the full details. The searcher must prove their authority (ID and death certificate) to get the will’s location from the holder.
What if my loved one’s will can’t be found?
If no will is found (or no will was made), the estate follows the UK’s intestacy rules (spouse/children inherit). To reduce this risk, you can upgrade to a “Combined Will Search” (checks both registered and unregistered wills) or place a Missing Will Notice via The National Will Register. There is also optional Missing Will Insurance for searches that come up empty.
Why should I register my will?
Registering your will provides a “safety net” – it records the will’s location so executors can find it easily after your death. This prevents loved ones having to guess where the will is or risking a will being overlooked or misplaced.
Is will registration mandatory in the UK?
No – there is no legal requirement to register a will. However, we strongly recommend it as best practice. Registered wills are much easier to locate for probate, adding an extra layer of security and helping ensure your estate is administered according to your wishes.
How much does will registration cost?
It costs £30 (inc. VAT) to register a will – whether it’s your own or someone else’s. Many people register at the time of writing or updating a will.
How do I register my will with The National Will Register?
You can register online in about 60 seconds using the NWR website or ask your solicitor to do it for you. The process only asks for basic details of the testator, the date of the will, and the location of the original will. No copy of the will is needed.
Do solicitors automatically register wills?
No – solicitors do not automatically register wills. Many firms will offer it as an extra service, but it’s important to ask. If you’re writing or updating a will, confirm with your solicitor that they will register it with us.
What information do I need to register a will?
Only the testator’s basic details, the date of the will, and where the original will is kept. For example, the form asks for the person’s name, will date, and the name/address of the solicitor or storage facility holding it. (We will never ask for a copy of the will.)
